Israel is planning to install 1,000 mobile roadside shelters and renovate 500 public bomb shelters to protect its citizens as tensions with Iran continue to escalate, according to The Times of Israel.
The Israeli Defense Ministry stated that the portable shelters will be placed in “sensitive areas” across the country. Some locations have already received the new shelters. The project, created by the Defense Ministry and the Home Front Command, was approved by the Israeli government through a phone vote. Most of the 500 shelters to be refurbished are in central Israel, an area frequently targeted by Iranian strikes.
On Friday night, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported more missile launches from Iran. Israeli air defense systems responded, and air raid sirens were heard in several areas. The public was urged to take shelter immediately.
A fire broke out on the roof of an apartment building in central Israel following Iran’s latest missile strikes, according to local media.
The conflict between Israel and Iran has continued to intensify since June 13, when Israel launched Operation Rising Lion. The Israeli Air Force carried out several rounds of airstrikes on targets in Iran, including in Tehran, killing senior military officials and nuclear scientists. Nuclear facilities like Natanz and Fordow were also hit. Israel claims that Iran is secretly working on a military nuclear program.
Iran denies the military aspect of its nuclear program. On June 18, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that there is no clear evidence Iran is actively pursuing nuclear weapons. U.S. intelligence has reached similar conclusions.
In response to the Israeli airstrikes, Iran launched Operation True Promise 3 on the evening of June 13, targeting military sites inside Israel. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned Israel’s attack as a crime and warned of a “bitter and terrible fate.”
Strikes have continued daily between the two countries. According to Iran’s Health Ministry, more than 220 people have been killed and 2,800 injured in Iran. Israel has reported over 20 deaths and 1,200 injuries.
